Whether you’re a regular to Canalside or a first-time visitor, there’s never been a better time to experience this extraordinary Buffalo Waterfront park than during the 2025 Bicentennial celebration of the Erie Canal.
Canalside is uniquely positioned at the terminus of the Erie Canal system, the 200-year-old marvel of engineering that served as the gateway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Lakes. Visitors can explore the canal’s rich history through exhibits, museums, special events, and installations throughout the summer. To learn more, visit eriecanalturns200.com.
“In honor of the Bicentennial, two historical ships will be docked at Canalside this season: the Seneca Chief and the Trippe, a war of 1812 replica boat,” said Lauren Moloney, General Manager, Buffalo Waterfront. “The Seneca Chief, which is set up as a living museum, will be open for tours with docents on site to share historical facts with visitors. And small groups of six guests can book short voyages along the canal aboard the Trippe.”
Step inside the Longshed at Canalside for a unique Bicentennial experience entitled Waterway of Change featuring interactive multimedia exhibits highlighting Buffalo’s Erie Canal story. For more information about the Bicentennial celebration at Canalside, visit Buffalowaterfront.com/erie-canal.
The 3,000 square foot Gateway Building at Canalside officially opens its doors this summer. Inside, visitors will find public information, washrooms, and retail.
On the Boardwalk
The picturesque Canalside boardwalk is home to daily activities such as waterside vendors, fitness classes and children’s programming, as well as several annual community events including the Indian and Asian cultural festivals. A full schedule of events is available here.
This year, the water will once again flow through the replica canal and visitors can experience the miniature waterway by pedal and paddle boats.
The delicious Nick Charlap’s ice cream is expanding their Canalside offering this season, and visitors can shop local while showing their love for Buffalo with merchandise from Buffalove Apparel Company.
